It's about time I made an Intro and Outtro to my show...I'll get on that. This weeks show definitely had more indie-folk and new blues than last, and I was especially impressed with Dustin Kensrue's switch from pop-screamo band Thrice to bluesy accoustic sounding solo work. Keep it up Kensrue. I was especially stoked to find some Camera Obscura AND!! Belle & Sebastian pieces with harmonica segments..see how versatile it is! Just more the reason to pick one up :) I wonder if Andrew Bird has any harmonica..I've been searching but no luck. Next show I'm gonna try to find some hip-hop and reggae harmonica. Brace yourselves.

Though we still heard some pretty eclectic stuff (Joseph Arthur and his emo harmonica incisions and a Middle Eastern delight from Irish Brendan Powers), today's playlist mostly focused on killer blues and bringin' the harmonica back to its roots. Modern Blues players like John Popper from Blues Traveler, Mitch Kashmar, Charlie Musselwhite, and Rod Piazza keep traditional blues sound and lyrics alive today, but maybe with a little more upbeat attitude and rhythm. If you're just starting out on the harmonica, listen to these guys first..and non-stop. They'll give you a very strong foundation and from there you can explore all you want. The tallest trees with the most branches and leaves have the strongest roots :).

The Didgeriblues by Brendan Power still holds as some of the most impressive harmonica playing I have ever heard. Its not just the different bending or blowing techniques he uses, but moreso how he incorporates Aboriginal, Irish Folk, and Delta blues all into on one song. This is a true work of originality. Brendan Powers, Jason Ricci, Carlos Del Junco, and Howard Levy (to mention very few) are pushing...well, blowing and drawing...the harmonica into boundaries and sounds never before conceived. Even if you're a blues traditionalist, you can't deny the talent and innovation of these cutting edge artists. I HIGHLY recommend listening to them if not purchasing their cd's if you're looking to expand your harp playing horizon.

I was super stoked that Broken Social Scene had harmonica, and its in C! so you can play along for all of you who have a C harmonica. Check out all these artists, they all have their own unique style of harmonica that fits immaculately into their music, from the distorted off-key high notes of Captain Beefheart to the electro-bluesy feel of Helio Sequence, the harmonica fits into any genre of music and adds an irreplaceable emotional backbone.

This was my second show, my first turned out to be an utter disaster and to add insult to injury I don't even have the first playlist! From here on out I changed the format of the show by playing experimental/indie/electronica harmonica songs for the first hour and a half then transitioning to more traditional blues during the second half. Currently, I'm trying to incorporate more traditional blues in the indie sets...a lot more difficult than it sounds.
